James Welsh (otherwise Moulsh) guilty of stealing a black gelding (valued at £20), the property of Alexander M’Williams, in the parish of St Bees on 5th February 1792.
The execution of Welsh is not reported in the Cumberland Packet: in the paper of 18th September it states “James Welsh was ordered for execution yesterday at Carlisle; so late as Sunday he refused to confess any other crimes than that he had been convicted of: his respite does not appear to have had the desired effect, but rather to have hardened him.” The registers of St Mary’s, Carlisle record, on 17 September, the burial “James Welsh (age 36), executed this day for horse stealing”.
